By Fiona CAMERON (text)

The Jerusalem Post is focusing on the difficulties of Israeli parties forming a coalition.

The Jerusalem Post (Israel)
US worried over prospect of right-wing gov't

One angle is concern in the White House over a possible new right-wing Israeli government. The paper's source articulated hopes of a new PM whose position would be in line with the US’s own policies on the Arab – Israeli reconciliation.

Haaretz (Israel)
White House unclear how Israel elections will effect Middle East peace

The White House says it looks forward to working with Israel's new PM but “the shift to the right is clear and there are no breakthroughs expected with the peace process. In fact, Iran, a Hamas sponsor, is considered to be a more promising track.”

The Guardian (UK)
Obama officials despair as poll outcome puts focus on US-Israeli links

The paper reports that some in the Obama administration are in despair at the outcome of the Israeli elections, believing that a right-wing government will dash their hopes of peace in the Middle East. There will have to be discussions on the US relationship with Israel which could undercut Obama’s overtures to Arab nations such as Iran and Syria.

Libération (France)
La Tentation Protectionniste (Protectionist temptation)

The protectionist tendency.... Libération condemns the protectionist measures coming from a number of governments as a way to fix economies.

“World business -  a return of each for their own."

The lefty paper gives example cases of national protectionism in France (protecting auto industry), the US ('Buy American'), and Russia (moving to halt the import of Japanese cars). In an editorial they say this tendency is suicide for world economies and that France must stick to the carefully created EU trade rules.

The Australian celebrates the bicentenary of both Abraham Lincoln and Charles Darwin.

The Australian (Australia)
Brave men, big ideas

The paper praises the courage of both Lincoln and Darwin in pursuing ideas considered unorthodox in their time  – and say we need a few more like them today.

The Independent (UK)
Darwin can teach Vatican useful lesson

This week the Vatican admitted Darwin may have been on to something,  that his theory of evolution is actually compatible with the Christian faith.  Archbishop Gianfranco Ravasi has said “what we mean by evolution is the world as created by God”. The article welcomes comments from the church at a time when creationism is gaining ground.

Finally  - Vogue has a new cover girl.

The Times (UK)
Michelle Obama as Vogue's cover star

Michelle Obama is ending a period of relative seclusion, giving intimate details of life as ”Mom in Chief” to Vogue.  She’s the second first lady - and perhaps more significantly only the 18th black woman - to ever have graced the front cover. The photographs are by famous photographer Annie Leibovitz.
