Job haemorrhage around the world
The crisis is affecting vast swathes of the global economy beyond sectors such as banking and car manufacturing, in which layoffs have been the most dramatic. FRANCE 24 has compiled a list of some of the more significant job cuts.
The axe came down hard on Monday, January 26, as companies around the world announced a combined total of at least 85,000 job cuts. The layoffs came from some of the biggest US corporate names, including Pfizer, General Motors, Caterpillar and Sprint Nextel, and news of additional cuts came from Japanese automakers and Dutch bank ING.
The crisis is affecting a broader range of the economy beyond the sectors such as banking and car manufacturing, in which layoffs have been most dramatic. FRANCE 24 has compiled a list of recent significant announcements. (The country in parenthesis is the country where the company is headquartered, not necessarily the country where the job cuts will take place.)
