Danny Boyle's rags-to-riches tale of a young boy in Mumbai clinched a staggering 8 Oscars while Kate Winslet claimed the Best Actress award in a glorious night for British cinema. The evening's other big winner was Best Actor Sean Penn, rewarded for his startling performance as gay rights activist Harvey Milk. The late Heath Ledger won a posthumous Oscar as supporting actor for his part in The Dark Knight, while Meryl Streep and comeback-kid Mickey Rourke left the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles empty-handed.
