High winds delay opening of Serbia-Spain match

The first two matches of the Spain-Serbia Davis Cup encounter have been suspended due to high winds in Benidorm. Weather updates and information on how they will affect the timing for the first round are expected Saturday.

REUTERS - The start of Spain's Davis Cup match against Serbia has been suspended due to high winds, the Spanish tennis federation (RFET) said on Friday.

 

The weather conditions had made the purpose-built arena on the outskirts of the seaside town unsafe and technicians were working to find a solution, RFET said in a statement on its website.

 

An update on the situation would be given at a news conference at 1000 GMT on Saturday, it added.

 

David Ferrer was due to begin Spain's title defence in the opening singles rubber against Novak Djokovic followed by world number one Rafael Nadal against Janko Tipsarevic.
