In the papers
France 24 journalists review highlights from the world's papers.
Le Figaro (France)
Ahead of Hillary Clinton’s meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in Geneva - the first formal high-level talks between the two countries since President Barack Obama took office - the press was awash with speculation about the US-Russia relationship. French newspaper Le Figaro has an analysis piece saying it’s all hanging in the balance, that nothing is yet defined and that both sides ties’ are starting from zero. The paper asks if Russia and Barack Obama’s US will become partners or enemies.
The Moscow Times (Russia)
Meanwhile, Russian paper The Moscow Times has a front page article on just exactly how productive today’s meeting and the US-Russia relationship is likely to be, specifically looking at the Iranian question. The US is eager for Moscow to put pressure on Iran over its nuclear programme, but this article cites different analysts as saying there’s actually not much Russia can do aside from using its veto power as a permanent member of the UN Security Council.
Le Figaro (France)
Sticking with Hillary Clinton, the US Secretary of State has written an article in Le Figaro on women’s rights. International Women’s Day is coming up on Sunday, but there are already a huge amount of articles in today’s press on female emancipation. Clinton says she’s seen a lot of progress in this field as she’s travelled the world over the years, and adds that it’s not just a moral obligation to boost the role of women, but a practical necessity in these times of economic crisis. Clinton admits there’s still a lot of work to be done on women’s issues.
Al Hayat (Saudi Arabia)
‘With numbers of single women increasing, matchmakers turn to chance to forge a marriage’
Perhaps proving Hillary Clinton’s point that more work needs to be done is an article in the Saudi Arabian edition of the pan-Arabic newspaper Al Hayat. The report says that, because of concern in Saudi society over a growing number of women not getting married, matchmakers are now choosing women husbands by pulling their names out of a hat. Al Hayat reports that the scheme is a huge success.
Chicago Tribune (USA)
US President Barack Obama may be enjoying high poll ratings, but there seems to be somewhat of a backlash against him in the press, with several slightly more critical articles creeping in. In the US, there’s a lot of talk about Obama appointing numerous ‘policy tsars’ – powerful, high-up officials in charge of tricky issues. So far the President has apparently named a health tsar, an environment tsar, even a government performance tsar. The Chicago Tribune has a story that some senators and pressure groups say this is too much – that the tsar system is not democratic as they don’t have to answer to Congress.
The Guardian (UK)
UK newspaper The Guardian has a feature on Obama’s ageing – producing a series of photographs showing the President’s increasingly greying hair.
Metro (UK)
Michael Jackson has announced 10 concert dates in London – a final curtain call for the King of pop. The typically acerbic British press is using this as an excuse to have a look back at ‘Wacko Jacko’s’ most embarrassing moments.
The Daily Telegraph (UK)
The broadsheet the Daily Telegraph is running an old photo of Jackson dangling his baby over a third floor hotel balcony.
