Italy's Pellegrini sets new 200m freestyle world record

Latest update : 2009-03-09

Federica Pellegrini broke her own 200m freestyle world record at the Italian championships in Riccone, swimming the distance in a time of 1 minute 54.47. The Italian had set the previous record at the Beijing Olympics.

REUTERS - Italy's Federica Pellegrini set a new world record in the 200 metres freestyle at a meet in Riccione on Sunday.

Pellegrini won the final in a time of 1 minute 54.47, beating her own mark of 1:54.82 which she clocked to win the gold medal at the Beijing Olympics last year.

The 20 year-old, who also holds the world record in the 400 freestyle, had a panic attack at the meet on Friday and pulled out of a race.

"This record has shocked even me, I didn't think I could lower the record from the Olympics by so much," Pellegrini told Rai television.

"I am well, this time shows that my training and preparation are alright."
