"Madoff pleads guilty to 11 charges"

Front pages are dominated by the guilty plea by Bernard Madoff, with French dailies Libération and Le Figaro putting the disgraced American financier on the front page. He's also on the cover of the Wall Street Journal. Inside the paper reports victims of his multi-billion dollar fraud were "gratified" to see Madoff sent to jail.

The sentencing of Muntazer Al Zaidi, the Iraqi journalist who threw his shoes at former US President Bush, gets heavy coverage in the Arab press. Gulf News, based in the United Arab Emirates, features a picture of Zaidi's relatives weeping outside Iraq's Central Criminal Court as he was handed his three year sentence.

The Emirates daily The National says the sentence was unduly harsh. From a professional point of view it says Zaidi should have expressed his views differently than throwing his shoes at the US President. But it argues that the sentence is disproportionate and probably counterproductive.

A doctor in the UK says chocolate should be taxed in the same way as alcohol and cigarettes to help the country tackle obesity. But pictured is Peggy Griffiths, who's a hundred years old and says it hasn't done her any harm. In fact she says been downing thirty bars a week for the past ten years.
