Norway's Svindal clinches second World Cup title
Norway's Aksel Lund Svindal claimed his second World Cup title after the season's last slalom in Are (Sweden). His closest opponent, Austria's Benjamin Raich, was forced out after straddling a gate. Svindal had won the overall title in 2007.
REUTERS - Norway's Aksel Lund Svindal won the men's World Cup title on Saturday after his only rival for the overall crown, Austria's Benjamin Raich, straddled a gate in the last slalom of the season.
Svindal led Raich by two points at the start of the first run of the very last race of the season and needed to finish ahead of his rival to secure a second World Cup title.
Raich, who won Friday's giant slalom, was enjoying a steady run but crashed out when he was within reach of his second World Cup crown, leaving him as runner-up for the third year in succession.
Svindal captured the overall title in 2007 but missed most of last season following a crash in a U.S. downhill race in Beaver Creek in Dec. 2007.
