Hamilton disqualified from Australia GP

Latest update : 2009-04-02

World Champion title holder Lewis Hamilton has been disqualified from the latest Australia GP for deliberately misleading race stewards. The third place was given back to Italian Jarno Trulli by the International Automobile Federation.

AFP - World champion Lewis Hamilton's third place at the Australian Grand Prix was Thursday overturned by the sport's governing body. Toyota's Jarno Trulli was reinstated to third place.

The FIA ruled that Hamilton provided misleading information on the circumstances leading to Trulli being penalised for passing him under safety car conditions on lap 57.

Hamilton was fourth at the time and Trulli third. The Italian was subsequently slapped with a 25-second penalty, which saw him relegated to 12th.

Thursday's decision not only hands Trulli back a podium place but sees Hamilton and McLaren excluded from the race classification.
