- Barack Obama - European Union - Nicolas Sarkozy - Turkey

Should Turkey join the European Union?
Turkey membership in the European Union is again on the table. US President Barack Obama would like to tighten the link between Ankara and western Europe. But many disagree.

What about Public Opinion?

What about public opinion? Could you provide some numbers? Some times ago i've seen in some newspapers, that the vast majority of Europeans are against the accession of Turkey to the European Union. In countries like Germany, Austria, Greece, France, Cyprus, Sweden and Denmark there is very strong public resistance, often more then two thirds of the population opposes the entry of Turkey in the EU. If just one of these countries holds a referendum on the Turkey question, and comes out with a NO, there would be no Turkey accession (Though i am not sure if that would change when the Lisbon Treaty is in place, which would make a unanimous vote obsolete?)

Unfortunately the EU has lately little prestige in Europe, although European politicians stear its course, they blame it at home for all their problems as if they had no say. What if the EU would accept Turkey against the will of the vast majority of European citizens, what would that mean for the support of the EU?
