Maurice Druon, a prominent novelist and member of the French Academy, died at his home on Tuesday at the age of 90, academy sources said. Author of the prize-winning 'The Great Families', Druon also served as French culture minister.

AFP - Maurice Druon, the prominent novelist and member of the French Academy, the pre-eminent body on the French language, died on Tuesday at the age of 90, the academy said.

Druon died at his home, the academy's permanent secretary Helene Carrere d'Encausse told AFP, without elaborating.

Born in Paris on April 23, 1918 to a Russian father, Druon was a prolific writer who was elected to the French Academy in 1966 at the age of 48.

In 1948 he received France's top literary prize, the Goncourt, for his historical novel "The Great Families."

Druon also served as culture minister during the early 1970s as well as the academy's permanent secretary.

"He was a very close friend. It is an enormous loss for the academy," Carrere d'Encausse said.

"He was the academy's memory," she added.
