From 'TJ' to Mustafa: Guantanamo guard converts to Islam
As a prison guard at Guantanamo Bay, Terry Holdbrooks witnessed the inhumane treatment of detainees who resolutely kept their faith. It was an observation that led the Phoenix, Arizona native to convert to Islam.

As a guard in Guantanamo Bay, Terry Holdbrooks was charged with keeping a careful watch on detainees in the infamous detention center. But after a series of extraordinary interactions between the former US Army specialist and Muslim detainees at the center, the Phoenix, Arizona-born prison guard decided to convert to Islam.

During his service at Guantanamo, Holdbrooks says the detainees were often subjected to sadistic, degrading treatment by interrogators.

In an interview with FRANCE 24’s Guillaume Meyer, the former prison guard rattled off a list of sometimes brutal, often humiliating situations the detainees were subjected to. “Detainees were punched, kicked, knee-butted, things like that would occur,” he said. “Detainees would be doused in cold water…be subjected to very loud music…investigators would come in and sometimes rough up a detainee…”

Through it all, Holdbrooks said, a number of detainees continued to practice their faith. And that left an indelible mark on the US prison guard. “Seeing people who were practicing Muslims, practicing Islam in a horrible place like that…it was an interesting experience for me to see somebody take their faith so seriously, so devoutly,” he told FRANCE 24.

‘Wrong place at the wrong time’

While prison guards often develop a hostile relationship with detainees, there have been recent cases of former Guantanamo guards developing sympathetic relations with the detainees.

According to Holdbrooks, it was easy to differentiate between those who had “ill will toward the US” and those who were simply “at the wrong place at the wrong time”.

“I can think back to an old man and a child,” recalled Holdbrooks. “I don’t think they knew of a world outside Afghanistan. I don’t think they knew there were oceans or that the world was round or that there was the Internet, computers or cell phones or any of these things. They just knew their village. How can somebody like that be a co-conspirator of the 9/11 attacks?” he asked.

Holdbrooks himself has had a troubled history of substance addiction, according to media reports. Following his conversion to Islam at Guantanamo, Holdbrooks was honourably discharged from service. No reasons were supplied for his release from the military two years before the end of his commitment.

When he returned home to Phoenix, Holdbrooks took to heavy drinking and a cocaine addiction, he told the French daily Le Figaro, before his serious addiction problem landed him in hospital. This time, it was a local imam at a Phoenix mosque that led him back to Islam.

US President Barack Obama has vowed to close the infamous prison by January 2010 and has established a multi-agency task force to review detainee policy.

But defense attorneys have criticized the US administration for dragging their feet over the cases of some 240 current detainees who were allowed to take their cases to federal courts following a US Supreme Court ruling last year.

is it possible?

but what if it is vice vers? i mean a muslim in the muslim world wants to convert to christianity? and indeed he converted ? what will happen? it is impossible in the muslim world to be converted into christianity. they will kill you. it is a saying of the prophet mohammad that any one leave islam shall be killed "kill him who change his faith". in the muslim world, people live in fear. many want tochange and convert to christianity but they cannot simply because they will be killed by other fellow muslims. moreover, in the west, muslim preach their religion freely. but in the muslim world, even thenative christians can not evern explicity express their faith. however, those who convert to islam in the west will sooner or later discover the real islam and they will , i hope, return to the true path of real faith in jesus christ our saviour.

This is America.. freedom

Good for him. He made the choice he wanted with no fear from the others. This is the true America. Making your decision no matter what. One more thing. America is not Christian or Muslim. America is a combination of everything. Americana are groups of immigrants. each one has his own religion and culture. Freedom; this is what America is all about

Twitter

If you don't stand for anything, you'll fall for anything. It just shows how morally bankrupt, (Lost), my generation of Americans are. For even a U.S. Soldier, first committing physical and psychological torture to murderers and war mongers, then converting to their faith that "justifies their blood-lust actions", the slaughtering of 'unbelievers'! We'll at least the conquered addiction. What an Twitt!.

The bigbang!!

You know people, i just wanted to say that you have to look for the truth , which is God exist.
If you study the bigbang theory, and by the way its mentioned in the Quran don't say iam laying before you look for it and read it, you will find that at the begining the explosion that happened resulted in sterilizing xray and gamaray and all kind of rays and waves that there was definitly no life and there should be no life since it would never be exist, but we are the very clear clue that god exist.

Easily influenced

Literally the hundreds of guards I've talked to about this man are baffled at the things he has to say. Extolling the beauty of Islam in Guantanamo Bay? The depictions of these men serenly and piously practicing their faith amidst allegedly barbaric conditions? Nothing could be further from the truth, although I'm certain no one who believes everything the media feeds them will believe me. I've been assaulted with bodily fluids once, physically assaulted once and have witnessed dozens of completely unwarranted physical assaults on guards by detainees, and received and witnessed astoundingly racist and sexist verbal abuse by detainees every day. I was also inspired to have a change in faith. I've completely lost it. I'm now an atheist, because Islam laid bare how utterly man-made, bigoted, sexist, and hostile to anything other than itself all religions are.
