UN orders humanitarian team to "no-fire zone"
UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said on Thursday he was sending a humanitarian team to Sri Lanka's '"no-fire zone", where thousands of civilians are trapped in fighting between government troops and Tamil rebels.

AFP - UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon ordered Thursday the immediate despatch of a humanitarian team to northern Sri Lanka, where thousands of civilians are trapped by fighting between troops and rebels.

"I intend to immediately despatch a UN humanitiarian team to the no-fire zone," he told reporters in Brussels, after a Somalia donors conference.

"The purpose of this humanitarian team will be to first of all monitor the situation and support the humanitarian assistance and try to do whatever we can to protect the civilian population," the UN chief said.

"It is critical that this team be allowed into the no-fire zone as soon as possible, and I'm asking for the strong support and speedy assistance of the Sri Lankan government."

According to the Sri Lankan military, Tamil Tiger (LTTE) rebels were encircled Thursday in a tiny strip of land by government troops but were still putting up stiff resistance despite calls to surrender.

The army said the guerrillas controlled a mere 10-12 square kilometres (around four square miles) of territory on the northeast coast, where thousands of civilians are still trapped by the fighting.

"I am most concerned at the rapidly deteriorating situation in Sri Lanka," Ban said, adding that "too many lives are at stake".

"I would strongly urge the LTTE to lay down their arms and do whatever to protect the civilian population. So many lives have been sacrificed. There is no time to lose," he added.

Multi-faces of terrorism faced by a small nation Sri Lanka

The world’s largest Terrorist Diaspora with an efficient misinformation network is focused on tarnishing the image of a nation and its people by spreading blatant lies globally, with the blessings of ignorant western media and enormous funds. Accusing Sri Lanka for every crime committed by LTTE and unjustly comparing a disciplined Army of a nation with a ruthless terrorist group is their objective. It is hilarious to see an UN official blindly accusing both sides for shooting at liberated civilians. Anyone would understand why the ruthless terrorists are shooting at their eroding human shield but how can anyone in their proper mind could suggest that the soldiers (who had laid their lives to liberate those180, 000 people) would shoot at them? Isn’t it pure idiocy? This is what the helpless nation has to deal with while liberating its own people from a foreign funded, incomparably ruthless, terrorist establishment that has been ruining the lives of 20 million citizens for 30 years!
