Trochowski header gives Hamburg first-leg advantage
Hamburg SV stunned hosts Werder Bremen 1-0 in their UEFA Cup semi-final first leg on Thursday, thanks to a goal from Piotr Trochowski. The team, managed by Martin Jol (pictured) is now in control of the tie before next week's game.
REUTERS - Hamburg SV stunned hosts Werder Bremen 1-0 in their UEFA Cup semi-final first leg on Thursday with Piotr Trochowski's goal putting the visitors in control of the tie.
Midfielder Trochowski beat keeper Tim Wiese when he peeled back to the far post to meet a Guy Demel cross and headed it over the helpless keeper in the 28th minute.
Hamburg, beaten by Werder on penalties in the German Cup semi-final last week, were hungrier in the first half, missing a brace of clear chances through Ivica Olic and Paolo Guerrero.
With playmaker Diego stifled by a well-organised Hamburg defence, Werder started to probe the flanks and could have levelled through Claudio Pizarro and substitute Markus Rosenberg but in the end were left to rue their missed second half chances.
