A day after the Sri Lankan military said it had killed Tamil Tiger chief Vellupillai Prabharakan, President Mahinda Rajapakse announced the "complete defeat" of the Tiger rebels in an official victory speech to parliament Tuesday.

AFP - Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapakse announced Tuesday the "complete defeat" of the Tamil Tiger rebels, saying the government now controlled "every inch" of the island's territory.

"The writ of the state now runs across every inch of our territory," Rajapakse told parliament in a nationally televised address. "We have completely defeated terrorism."

He stressed that the crushing of the Tamil Tigers was a victory for the entire nation and should not be seen as a defeat for the minority Tamil community.
