Russians face off in women’s final
Favorite Dinara Safina (pictured) has nailed down her ticket for the French Open final this Saturday, where she will play against fellow Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova, who eliminated Samantha Stosur of Australia.
For the second year in a row, Russian player Dinara Safina has qualified for the final of the French Open. Since the tournament’s start she has lost only one set, against Arazenka -- a strong showing for a world number one, who is still chasing a Grand Slam title.
The following is an excerpt from the press conference that followed Safina’s victory against Czech player Dominika Cibulkova (6-3, 6-3).
Question : You were in the finals last year. How does this year compare?
Dinara Safina : Things were much easier last year. I came on to the court with nothing to lose, like her [Dominika Cibulkova]. She came on to the court and had nothing to lose. As for me, I have a chance this year. I want to win, there’s more pressure. I know that a lot of people expect me to win a match like this one.
Q: Does the fact that this is your third Grand Slam final this season help you?
DS: All that counts is victory. I hope that this time I’ll be able to win.
Q: Do you think that you’ve already legitimized your position as number one, or do you still need another match and a win here?
DS: What I need is to win the final and take home the title. I want to give that to the people and show them that I deserve this spot. The way I play today shows, I think, that I do right by the sport.
Q: Will you change your game to adapt to your next opponent?
DS: These are girls who run very well. It’s up to me to be on the court, very present, to hit the ball hard and use all weapons.
