AFP - The Organisation of American States on Wednesday gave Honduras 72 hours to reinstate deposed President Manuel Zelaya or face suspension of its membership in the group, according to a communique.
  
The general assembly of the organization instructed Secretary General Jose Miguel Insulza to "undertake, together with representatives of various countries, diplomatic initiatives aimed at restoring democracy and the rule of law and the reinstatement of President Jose Manuel Zelaya Rosales.
  
"Should these prove unsuccessful within 72 hours, the Special General Assembly shall forthwith .... suspend Honduras' membership," in keeping with the group's charter, the OAS said.
  
The OAS added that it was was "gravely concerned about the political crisis in the Republic of Honduras as a result of the coup d'etat" which it said "has produced an unconstitutional alteration of the democratic order."
