Obama asks Congress to act quickly on health reform

Text by NEWS WIRES

Latest update : 2009-07-20

US President Barack Obama has asked the Congress to "act now" on healthcare reform amid growing costs for families, he argued. Reforming the health system was one of Obama's main campaign priorities.

REUTERS - President Barack Obama said on Monday that spiraling healthcare costs were battering American families and it is time for the Congress to take action to reform the $2 trillion U.S. healthcare system.

"Even as America's families have been battered by spiraling healthcare costs, health insurance companies and their executives have reaped windfall profits from a broken system," Obama said after a healthcare roundtable at Children's National Medical Center.

"We've talked this problem to death year after year but unless we act and act now, none of this will change," he said.
