AFP - Mark Cavendish won the Tour de France 19th stage here on Friday, with Spain's Alberto Contador retaining the leader's yellow jersey.
This was Columbia rider Cavendish's fifth stage win on this year's Tour and his ninth in total - a new British record.
The Isle of Man-born sprinter had drawn level with previous recordholder Barry Hoban, who was competing in the 1960s and 1970s, with victory in the 11th stage nine days ago.
