Minister says burqa ban would stop 'cancer' of radical Islam
A ban on wearing the head-to-toe covering known as the burqa would stem the spread of what France's minister for urban regeneration, Fadela Amara, called the "cancer" of Muslim radicalism, which Amara said "distorts the message of Islam".
AFP - A ban on wearing the all covering burka in France would stem the spread of what French minister Fadela Amara called the "cancer" of radical Islam, a report quoted her as saying Saturday.
The Muslim minister for urban regeneration told the Financial Times newspaper that the head-to-toe body covering and veil represented the "oppression of women, their enslavement, their humiliation."
Amara, who is of Algerian descent, said France was a beacon for an enlightened Islam at ease with modernity, so it was necessary to fight the "gangrene, the cancer of radical Islam which completely distorts the message of Islam."
"The vast majority of Muslims are against the burka. It is obvious why," Amara told the newspaper.
"Those who have struggled for women's rights back home in their own countries -- I'm thinking particularly of Algeria -- we know what it represents and what the obscurantist political project is that lies behind it, to confiscate the most fundamental of liberties," she said.
The comments came as French lawmakers conduct hearings on whether to ban the burka after President Nicolas Sarkozy said it was "not welcome" in secular France, home to Europe's biggest Muslim minority.

Merci Fadela
If the Muslims of Europe are so proud to be muslim why ...
Every day it is the same, muslim rights here, muslim rights there. Why are they actually so proud? Would they do the same in the country that some of them came from, I am sure that not at all... So if you are so proud to show that you're a muslim, then be between yourself where you come from, this way we all live in peace. Isn't it, if you feel oppressed then please listen to your feeling and go where you will be loved....
Burqa ban
This ban is an important first step to stop radicalisation in France. I would like to get it implemented in the whole of Europe. Freedom of religion should not mean freedom of promoting woman suppression. Any religion who's aim it is to destroy people with other ideas should be forbidden.
France 24 Reporters in Burqa
The reporters of france 24 have worn Burqa recently. There is video footage available. Is it a statement by France 24?
Welcome Decision
Its a good decision. I think other countries should follow the french example.
WHY!!
Why using that kind of language!!
You should choose your words wisely . I mean you can ban it if you want but don't say words that make people have a bad impression about other religions especially at your current postion!!!!
