In the Papers
A daily look at some of the stories in the international papers.
The Independent
The Independent did the portrait of Brian Haw. He’s 60 years old, and he might seem familiar because he’s been protesting outside the Houses of Parliament in England, for 3,000 days.
That’s eight years in total.
He’s been protesting against the wars in Iraq and in Afghanistan.
He denounces the British Foreign Policy and accuses the Government of murder and genocide.
“The lonely life of Brian”, that’s the title of the Independent.
The newspaper says his years living in the street, being fed by generous passers-bys, has made him irritable.
Brian, a former carpenter, has seven children, and his determination to fight against the war has cost him his family, he says.
His wife reportedly filed a divorce against him, a year into his protests.
Le Monde
The French newspaperLe Monde also talks about Afghanistan.
It says most women are not likely to vote, in tomorrow’s Presidential election.
One woman has even thrown away her voter registration card.
“There’s no democracy”, she says, denouncing insecurity, poverty, and the lack of education.
Afghan women say their situation is better than under the Taliban.
Under Hamid Karzai, they are at least allowed to work, they say.
Yet they are convinced their rights in Afghanistan will not improve much further.
Jerusalem Post
It looks like Israel has made a concession to the United States over its settlements in the West Bank.
The Jerusalem Post, however, warns that it’s not a concession.
It says the United States knew about the freeze and that the Netanyahu Government has not approved any new building works in more than four months.
Right wing ministers, however are fuming, according to the newspaper. They say not all Cabinet members approve of this decision and they’re calling for a discussion with members of the coalition.
The Moscow Times
The Moscow Times talks about the Arctic Sea.
The Russian ship went missing last month an has just been found. According to the newspaper, the fact that Russian and Nato forces have been deployed to find this ship seems suspect.
It says the high-level efforts prompted sepculation, that the ship was carrying a secret freight besides the timber.
A Piracy Investigator claims the crew was involved in a “saga, with government interests”.
But he didn’t give any more details about the issue.
Daily Nation
A Tunisian teacher is reportedly pregnant with 12 babies.
It’s a new world record. The previous being octuplets, who were born earlier this year.
It’s not clear how far gone she is in her pregnancy, but she says she wants to keep her babies, but experts have said they have one chance in 100 to all survive.
Some doctors say she could give birth to all of them, but should do it at 20 weeks, which is half way through a normal pregnancy, or else her womb won’t be able to carry them all.
