Most of the profits from the cartels comes from our prohibition of cannabis. Legalize, tax, and regulate it and we will see a drop in violence. The cartels will still be there, but in a diminished form once their main source of revenue has dried up. Is it any wonder that the Mexican government continually asks us to change our policy towards cannabis? They implore us to do it, but we insist on keeping it Schedule 1 with "no medical value" and arrest upwards of 800,000 individuals (arrest, not jail) for cannabis related "offenses." Legalize it and not only will the USA save money, but we will make money and in the process ease the burden of the Mexican government.

The answer to the drug violence problem in Mexico is for the Mexican government to enact large CASH bountys on any known drug dealer brought in DEAD. Make the bounty tax-free and watch the soon-to-be burgeoning bounty hunter subculture wipe out the drug cartels. Pay lesser amounts for "soldiers" brought in dead and establish a sliding scale of payouts escalating up into the millions for drug kingpins brought in dead.
It's funny that this article mentions all these American guns, but wait....most of the guns being used on the streets here are fully automatic. I have family in the U.S. and they say you can't buy automatic weapons in the guns stores as this article suggests, it is also strange that the most confiscated weapons over here is the AK-47, a RUSSIAN weapon. The press is always trying to blame the Americans for our problems, they try to stuff their ideals down our throats and cast blame everywhere but on our own selves. All those guns might as well be rocks, a rock doesn't bother anyone, but a person can take a rock in anger and kill another. Drugs, guns, and money are not the problem. Humans are! Stop playing the blame game and get a life.
