- Socialist Party (France) - tax evasion
French Press Review
A daily look at some of the stories in the French papers.
Le Figaro is somewhat more cautious in its editorial saying there is indeed reason to hope that the Socialist Party is emerging from its long period of discontent because it has decided to “stop being ridiculous”. Many had written the party off as ‘dead’ but the conference shows that the party can still offer hope to its voters. The atmosphere in La Rochelle was best summed up by Pierre Moscovici – “Harmony, no but order, yes.”
Aujourd’hui en France covers Paris’s increasing clamp down on tax evasion. The French State needs money and has reached an accord with Swiss banks to reign in tax exiles. The Budget Minister has announced that he is in possession of a list of 3,000 names of those avoiding the French taxman in Switzerland.
The sports paper l’Equipe is gushing over Teddy Riner’s third world title. The 20 year old judo star beat the Cuban Oscar Bryson yesterday. Those in the judo world are hailing Riner as a talent that comes along just once in a generation.
Staying with sport, Aujourd’hui en France says that yesterday’s encounter between Olympique Marseille and Bordeaux was not the thriller that was promised. The French football season has only just begun and even if it was just a 0-0 draw between these two titans of the Ligue 1, OM at least can claim to have put a stop to Bordeaux 14 consecutive wins over two seasons.
Finally, cats get a mention in Le Figaro – a British researcher by the name of Karen McComb has identified a specific purring sound made by cats to indicate that they’re hungry. The purr is understood as ‘I’m hungry’ by 80% of cat owners. Miaow!
