After France's female hopes at the US Open were dashed on Thursday, the men had a better time in the second round. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Julien Benneteau have both qualified and will face each other in the third round.

AFP - French seventh seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga advanced to the third round of the US Open on Friday with a 7-5, 6-3, 6-4 victory over Finland's Jarkko Nieminen.

By taking the matchup of former US Open junior champions, the 24-year-old runner-up in last year's Australian Open gave himself a chance to reach the US Open round of 16 for the first time.

Tsonga will next face the winner of a later match between Serbia's Viktor Troicki and Frenchman Julien Benneteau.
