In the French Papers
A daily look at some of the stories in the French papers, with James Creedon
The French papers were full of coverage of last night's match against Serbia in Belgrade. France drew 1-1. Reduced to just 10 players after 13 minutes of play, les Bleus made an impressive comeback into the game thanks the Thierry Henry's 50th goal playing for the French team. France is now almost certain to get through to the playoffs from the 14th - 18th November.
For more, read all of the coverage in sports paper, l'Equipe.
On a sadder note several papers including l'Humanité cover the latest sad episode of a spate of suicides and suicide attempts at France Telecom. The management of the company has been under fire for not ensuring sane working conditions for its employees. Since the beginning of 2008, 21 staff at the company have ended their own lives.
Libération's front page covers a report released by Earth Rights International about oil giant Total's contracts in Burma. It is highly critical of the French company. We cover this in more detail in the international press review.
La Nouvelle République, a regional paper, reports a bizarre incident in Poitiers. Ségolène Royal is the President of the region and somebody decided to fly over the local airport and drop hundreds of fliers criticising her "toilet politics"! Not alone that, but the fliers blamed her for causing the economic crisis by introducing the 35 hour working week. Royal has lodged a police complaint.
