Yesterday saw the 24th suicide of a France Telecom employee since February 2008. Le Parisien says efforts have been made to ease the workload and stress of France Telecom staff. For instance many have to move around every three years – depending on their function. The company has now put an end to this policy which is obviously difficult for families. What’s more, a questionnaire is being sent to every employee asking precise questions about the nature of stress at work.

Le Nouvel Observateur wonders if 24 suicides in 18 months is really an increase. If you back to 2003, there were 22 suicides in the company. In 2002 there were 29 suicides. The France Telecom figures actually pale in comparison to other sectors or professions. The statistics show 11.7 suicides for 100,000 employees in 2007 whereas there are 35 suicides per 100,000 in the police force each year and 39 per 100,000 amongst teachers.

Other stories we covered:
Business paper La Tribune’s editorial is on Saturday’s arrest of Roman Polanski.

Le Figaro runs an article about the mysterious inbuilt “GPS system” of the monarch butterfly (more interesting than it sounds!)
