In today’s French press review, we look at various reactions about the trial of the former French President.

IN THE PAPERS

The former French President, Jacques Chirac is accused of corruption in a case that dates back from when he was mayor of Paris, more than twenty years ago.
 
Le Figaro published a column, written by Frederic Salat-Baroux. He was one of Chirac’s advisors and he says the trial is necessary, so that “justice can be made”. According to him, Chirac is getting ready to prove his innocence.
 
At the time, his lawyers argue that there were no rules regarding employment at the City Hall. They say it is “ridiculous” to judge him now, based on new laws.
 
 
We also look at new revelations on the “Tarnac case”. Libération talks about “An investigation at high speed”.
 
Last year, train lines were sabotaged in central France. Authorities arrested nine people at the time, including a man called Julien Coupat and his girlfriend.
Authorities said they had found their foot prints and traces of their tires on the crime scene. But now, a counter-enquiry seems to show the traces do not match.
 
 
Most front pages featured Nicolas Sarkozy’s plan to scrap a business tax, including France Soir, la Tribune and Les Echos.
Sarkozy’s proposal has been largely criticized by Senators, including the former Prime Minister Jean-Pierre Raffarin.
 
And finally we talk about the Day of the Dead, with the invention of a new cleaning product for gravestones.

'Sarkozy: a candidate this week'

FRENCH PAPERS, Mon. 13/02/12. According to Le Figaro, Nicolas Sarkozy will announce he’s running for a second term between now and the end of the week. The right-leaning paper says that although on paper everything is against him, he will still win the election. The Communist paper L’Humanité says Sarkozy is pandering to potential voters from the far-right.
