Afghanistan: "Victory for a crooked government"
In today’s international press review, we look at the re-election of Hamid Karzai at the head of Afghanistan.
Let’s take a look at the striking front page of The Independent: “Victory (for a crooked, corrupt and discredited government)”
The British daily calls Hamid Karzai’s re-election “a disaster” and an embarrassment for United States, that are currently considering whether to send extra troops to Afghanistan. The Independent says Karzai has lost all credibility, abroad and at home.
Same tone in the LA Times, which paints a grim future for the country.
The paper talks about eight bloody years Afghanistan, with more than $200 BILLION spent, 68,000 troops currently deployed, and a resurgent Taliban movement.
In other news, the city of New York is electing its new Mayor today. The New York Times brings us more detail about the candidates’ campaigns.
The French newspaper Libération calls Michael Bloomberg “The King of New York”.
And finally, find out who out of the French, the Americans and the Russians drink more alcohol. The International Herald Tribune reports on the story.
