Britain’s escalating extremism
A new organisation is taking on radical Muslims in the United Kingdom. The English Defence League’s movement is slowly gaining ground across the country, as its members protest against those who want to impose Sharia law across Britain.
By James ANDRE / Kate WILLIAMS
The Queen of England, a Muslim convert? Buckingham Palace, a mosque?
That’s what Islamist extremists in Britain, such as Anjem Choudary, have been calling for. They want Sharia law imposed across the country, with every man, woman and child conforming to the strict Islamic code when in the public arena.
But not if the English Defence League can help it.
Luton is a small, multicultural town about an hours drive north of London. In March 2009, the Second Battalion The Royal Anglian Regiment paraded here to mark the end of their tour in Iraq. Their return home was met with pride - and protests.
A group of Muslim protestors had gathered, some bearing placards declaring the soldiers “Baby killers” for having gone to Iraq. This highly-charged event gave birth to an organisation called the United People of Luton, soon to become the English Defence League.
With members and divisions now spread across the UK, the EDL calls for all Islamist extremists to be banned and hold protests all over the country to raise their profile.
Many of these demonstrations have turned violent. Little wonder, given the EDL’s choice of clothing: makeshift “burkhas”, designed to both protect their own identities and to provoke the Muslim community.
The group they are most vehemently opposed to is ‘Islam 4 UK’, led by Anjem Choudary. Choudary is a self-proclaimed judge in some of the UK’s 85 Sharia courts and teaches up and down the country with the London School of Sharia.
The Islam 4 UK website reveals pictures of how his followers see Britain in future: Islamic flags fly from London’s best known monuments, while Buckingham Palace is redesigned with a minaret.
Choudary and his supporters also hold protests, chanting slogans such as ‘Freedom Go to Hell’ and ’Democracy Hypocrisy’.
But such is the level of tolerance in the UK that both sides will be allowed to have their say – as long as they stay on the right side of the law.
And staying on the right side of the law is the all-important rule that has allowed Islam 4 UK, as well as the EDL, to campaign as hard as they have. Freedom of speech is a principle that the British public are reluctant to give up, even if the consequences are extremist propaganda and violence. That is what allows Choudary to say in our video that he is aligned with al-Qaida, and what allows the EDL to chant ‘Islam Out’ in their protests.
Choudary in particular knows just how far he can go while still remaining within the confines of the law. At the end of our interview, he asked us how soon we would be forwarding the tape to the police, although he wasn’t worried; he hadn’t “said anything too illegal anyway”.
The EDL is opposed to his beliefs and to the fact that he is impressing them on young Muslims all over the country. They are incensed that he can convert an 11 year old boy to Islam on a busy shopping street and go unchallenged. They abhor the fact that he refuses to condemn the 7/7 London bombers and that Sharia courts can exist alongside British courtrooms.
While they remain a relatively minority group, their message is resonating with some people across the UK and it remains to be seen how large the EDL movement can grow.

"muslims blow themselves up"
alright this says alot about the knowledge of Tommy and his mates. Muslim and Salafi or extemist are completely different terms. I cannot believe the first ones to comment are the same ones that have absolutely no knowledge of Islam whatsoever. So this EDL is right for defending English values on the English soil because England is a land of Christian people with Christian values and those who disagree with this should leave the country. Just like those who disagree with the fact the whole island of Ireland is a Catholic land with Catholic values and its Catholic community is RIGHT to defend their soil from foreign invadors (no matter how long the invader has been staying in the country).
Give this a thought.

EDL members are certainly not part time bums and you are correct we are all patriotic defenders of our Queen and Country who are opposing a growing threat from within. It is the UAF that are the fascists because they are the ones with the radical and authoritarian idealogy and their view is the only view.
They try to repress critiscism or See More opposition to their views, Fascist don't you think. EDL are not BNP and therefore the analogy of EDL and Hitler's SA is laughable to the extreme and just goes to show how far these idiots will go to try and denigrate the EDL who they know are increasing in numbers daily and are now something to be very worried about. It's like little kids name calling the EDL "racist"
The UAF's priority is not to oppose fascism. The UAF
is an extreme-left organisation that wants a revolution to overthrow what's left of our Christian-based society. Basically they want to create a new version of the USSR in Britain. To achieve their aims, the UAF will ally with any group that wants to overthrow the current order, even if that group wants a very different kind of society. This is why you see the UAF and other extreme left groups around Europe making an alliance with Islam.
Sharia

Very simple, if in Rome behave like a Roman. So, no to Sharia in Britain because we do not impose our faith to Saudis or the Pakistanis. Anyway most of them are just a bunch of hypocrits. Go to Bahrain on a Thursday night, you will see all the hotels and bars and prostites beeing taken over by Saudis. Is this cynical hypocricy of sharia?
Wrong target.

EDL could have saved itself a lot of hastle by protesting against the people that are allowing this to happen ie, LIB LAB CON.
Next of all EDL need to study what Islam actually is before protesting against one part of it.
The goal of Islam is the same whether done by extremists or moderates.
It's not the moderate muslims

It's not the moderate muslims who are caught in the crossfire, it's the commuters on the tubes and buses who are caught in the crossfire!

Hey, good reporting - the first time I've heard of the EDL. Your reporters' sub-text exposes the dilemma, freedom of speech is all very well. However, it should perhaps be limited when the political cause espoused ultimately would deny the very freedom it exploits. If only the Weimar Government had been able to deny the NAZIs' a platform.
generally well 'rounded' journalism

I think the video report is more informative and objective. For neutral observers, showing how EDL is thriving on ignorance and ignorance of mainstream muslims in the Uk, with the aid of Islam 4 uK, a fringe group if that, which EDL are rightly concerned about some of its intentions.
i think kate williams needs to be commended for her efforts. generally a good piece.

Good on the EDL. A non racist organisation standing up for our culture in the face of vicious, bigoted, sexist Islamic extremism, which the authorities allow to spread unchecked. The EDL are exactly what the country needs.
Post report discussion.

Sorry, but just to add the subsequent discussion was very good and well informed. I, too, think Choudary is a bit of a showman.
Best of luck for future work!

I thought journalism was all about being impartial? How can you interview Anjem Choudary, without interviewing the edl? You need to interview both side's of this coin before putting out statement's like this. For a start, how can you possible infer that the violence at some of the edl's protest's were caused by the burka's on the hoodies that some of the edl members wear? What a stupid statement to make, how did you come to that conclusion? That's like saying, if an edl member attacked a Muslim woman wearing a burka, then it was the burka that was the reason for the woman being attacked! Do a bit research before writting your story's, then you might get a bit nearer the truth. Everyone whose had anything to do with these demonstration's, know's the violence was caused by uaf/antifa members trying to attack the edl members, which usualy resulted in the police coming under attack when they couldn't get to the edl member's. At Luton, several police were injured after coming under attack from 2-300 asian youths, who threw bricks and bottle's at the police. This was two hour's after the protest had ended, and all edl members had left the area.
You say, "such as the level of tolerence in the UK, that both side's, will be allowed to have their say". For a start, the Musim extremist's have been allowed to have their say, as our spineless goverment, who allows these democratic, free speach hating cavemen, are terrified to stop them, as the threat of thousands of Muslim suicice bombers hitting our street's, is a very real threat. The political corectness is this country, has allowed these militents to flourish, unchecked. What is being kept from the public, through the goverment controlled media, is this isn't just happening in England, there is the sdl(Scotland), wdl(Wales), and udl(Ireland). There is also branches being set up in parts of America,Europe and Australia. The world is starting to organise themselve's into deffence league divisions, to fight against Islamic extremism, and lets hope we're not too late!!
