Fugitive French prisoner Jean-Pierre Treiber arrested
Fugitive prisoner Jean-Pierre Treiber was arrested Friday, two months after his daring escape from a French prison. Treiber was detained in 2004 on suspicion of a double murder and was awaiting trial at the time of his breakout.
Jean-Pierre Treiber, who escaped from a prison in northern France on September 8, was arrested on Friday in the French city of Melun, near Paris, the French Interior Ministry said.
According to a police source close to the investigation, Treiber was caught in an apartment owned by his friend’s daughter.
In 2004, Treiber was arrested for the murder of Géraldine Giraud, daughter of French actor Roland Giraud, and her lover Katia Lherbier.
After his prison escape, Treiber had been regulary writing sending letters to the press, friends and co-detainees in prison to express his innocene.
In his first letter to French magazine Marianne on 17 September, Treiber claimed he had no choice but to escape, saying he was on the brink of suicide and had lost faith in the French justice system.
The escapee included his prison identity card as proof that it was really him and promised to be present at his trial in the spring of next year.
