Web reacts to deadly coal mine blast in China

In today's edition: China's blogosphere examines the country's mining incidents; Thierry Henry's hand continues to spark online debate; and video surveillance cameras film a meteorite in the US.

COAL MINE ACCIDENT IN CHINA

Yet another mine tragedy in China. On Saturday morning a gas explosion in a coal mine in the north east of the country, killed at least eighty seven people. According to official statistics, over 3,000 miners have perished in accidents of this type in 2008. A problem which is mobilising the web.

There are many official sites entirely dedicated to mine safety. In particular they direct users to videos giving information about regulations the authorities find it hard to impose on mining companies. Here for example, a coal mine aeration system is examined with a fine tooth comb.

Engineers use the web to exchange videos such as these and to debate the way in which to mines should be altered. The aim being to reduce the risk of accidents to a minimum.

Accidents which nevertheless remain very frequent, with nearly 2,000 people having died in Chinese mines this year alone. This game was created as part of a minor training programme. It teaches workers what to do in the case of a firedamp explosion.

This blogger pays tribute to the men, whose work allows millions of homes to be heated. It compares the drips of condensation on radiators to the tears of the families who have lost a loved one in a mining accident.
