A trend getting bigger

That's quite true, this market is still a little underground at the moment but I am sure in a few years all large-public stores will be selling art toys next to cussions and lamps...

The thing is people often think of art toys as plastic figurines but you can also find a large diversity of art toys (not only little characters but also objects). A good example is a french brand "The Pirart Society". http://www.pirartsociety.com/collections/toys/
