Romanian centre-right President Traian Basescu narrowly won Sunday’s presidential run-off with just over 50 percent of the vote, beating his leftist challenger, former Foreign Minister Mircea Geoana, according to official results released Monday.

REUTERS - Romanian President Traian Basescu won a run-off presidential ballot with 50.37 percent of the vote, versus 49.63 for Social Democrat challenger Mircea Geoana, official results showed on Monday.

In a parallel news conference, Geoana's candidate for prime minister, Klaus Johannis, said "my road ends here", indicating the end of a coalition pact between the Social Democrats and the third largest Liberal party to rule jointly if Geoana won.
