Bad weather forces cancellation of women's downhill

Latest update : 2009-12-19

The women's World Cup downhill has been cancelled due to bad weather over Val d'Isère in France with no new fixture yet decided. Sunday's Super-G, however, is still scheduled.

AFP - Lindsey Vonn's bid for a third successive downhill win on the women's World Cup circuit ended abruptly Saturday after organisers were forced to cancel the race.

Poor weather, light snowfall on the course and poor visibility had forced two delays, before organisers decided to cancel - officially due to adverse wind conditions.

The race is likely to be postponed to another venue at another date.

Vonn, winner of the super-combined on Friday, was the overriding favourite to win the downhill.

The overall World Cup champion and world downhill and super-G champion had won the last two downhills in the series, at Lake Louise in Canada.

Vonn will get the chance to make amends in the women's super-G, which is scheduled for Sunday.

Germany's Maria Riesch, second on Friday, is tied with Vonn in the lead of the overall World Cup standings on 521 points.
