UK: “Drug Brit executed in China”

In today’s international press review, we focus on the execution of Akmal Shaikh in China.

A British man has been executed in China earlier today, accused of smuggling drugs. It’s the first time a European citizen is executed in China in half a century.

The British tabloid The Sun gives us more information about Akmal Shaikh.

The 53 year old from North London reportedly had mental disorders. According to his family, he dreamed of becoming a pop star.

The Sun says he was duped into being a drug mule by a gang, who promised him fame afterwards.

Meanwhile, The Guardian tells us how the Chinese judicial system works. According to the paper, China carries out three times more executions than the rest of the world put together.

The China Daily also reports on this story, quoting Chinese experts who say that “foreigners should respect the law”.

In other news, USA Today paints us a picture of what travelling could be like in the future. As for The Daily Mail, it reports about a new “naked body scan”.

And finally, The Independent talks about a free holiday in Mexico but warns about travelers’ diarrhea.
