Killer waves sweep beach walkers on New Year’s Day
Rescue teams in the south of France have wrapped up their mission a day after giant waves swept six people off the French Riviera on New Year’s Day. At least three people were killed by the tidal sweeps.
Rescue teams called off their search Saturday, following deadly giant waves that washed the shores of the French Riviera on New Year’s Day, killing at least three people.
At the Cap Croisette in Marseille, an elderly couple was found washed up fully dressed on the beach Friday. They were believed to have died while trying to save a dog from the waves, police told AFP, adding that their deaths are being treated as accidental.
In separate incidents on the same stretch of the Cote d'Azur coastline, six beach-goers were engulfed by waves -- though five of them managed to make their way back to shore, the Nice Matin newspaper reported. A young woman of 28 however suffered a cardiac arrest after she was engulfed by waves stirred up by strong westerly winds.
Coastal areas of Corsica also suffered extensive damage during the stormy weather.
While the weather had significantly calmed on Saturday, the seas were rough, with waves rising to between 1.5 and 2 metres.

Awww that is so sad with the old couple dieing! Risking their lives to save their dog...wowww that's impressive. But i mean i proably woulda done the same i mean really, when your out there in the ocean you never think that you could be swept up in the sea, like i'm pretty sure that didn't even cross their minds. Sad, sad sad!

Big Waves?
Big waves to me(a Old surfer) are 10'plus. Im surprised no one from Biarritz drove over there to take them on.If youre caught in a rip you should just go with it, and not fight it. You will come out of it ok if you dont panic.EX: I lost my surfboard in Maroc and swam after it. I went out 2miles and south 4 miles before getting back in. If I would of fought it, I wouldnt be writing this today.......Murphy
