A crash on stage six between Antofagasta and Iquique has left Italian biker Luca Manca fighting for his life.

The race was plunged into drama on Thursday with Italian biker Luca Manca fighting for his life after crashing on stage six between Antofagasta and Iquique, in the north of Chile.

After crashing on kilometre three, the 29-year-old biker was taken to a Calama hospital then later transferred to a Santiago hospital.

According to the French daily L'Equipe, Manca suffered mutiple injuries from his crash and has been placed in an artifical coma.

In a cruel twist of fate, the KTM biker had already been in the media spotlight on Wednesday for heroically stopping to help a broken down Marc Coma change a rear tyre.
