Fight against tax fraud: is it for real?

In Washington, Brussels and Paris, one issue has taken centre stage: tax evasion. While US senators grilled Apple executives for avoiding high taxes, European leaders vowed to crack down on fraud and French lawmakers looked into a recent scandal involving a government minister.

Hooligans in Paris: a government blunder?

Interior minister Manuel Valls has been a rare shining star in the socialist government. However this week, he has come under withering criticism from the opposition for the violent incidents that have marked the celebrations of the championship win of the Paris football team. So, did the government blunder or is the Right playing politics?

France and Germany: the end of an era?

"Friendly tension". Since François Hollande uttered those words to describe the relationship with Germany during a TV interview in late March, it seems like a Pandora's box has been opened. After years of keeping mum about France's closest ally in Europe, a number of French Socialists have openly criticised Berlin for imposing harsh austerity measures across Europe. Some have even called for confrontation with Germany. Is this healthy debate, or are we witnessing a real crisis?

Hollande's first year in power: the president's leadership in question (part 2)

After just one year in power, the French president re-defines the word "unpopular". Only a quarter of the French population approve of him. His leadership is in question. Yet he does have several political achievements he can point to. Parliament has authorised gay marriage, François Hollande acted decisively in Mali to take the country back from jihadists and it seems he has managed to distance himself from the lies and deception of his former budget minister.

Hollande's first year in power: struggling to fix the economy (part 1)

French President François Hollande has now been in office for one year, but the Elysée palace is not about to celebrate the anniversary. Hollande came to power riding a wave of discontent that has now turned against him. So what went wrong? The economy, mostly. Unemployment figures have reached an all-time high: more than 3.2 million people are out of work. That means French joblessness is at almost 12%, and it's been rising steadily for two years.

full face veil

Following the debate and the law adopting in France concerning the ban the full face veil I would like to contribute with some arguments.
First of all the burga is against the values of the western europe. Why the europeens has to accept the values of the islam in their countries and why we cannot impose the contrary that means the respect of our values . If the muslims they can not be adapted to the values and the way of life of the europeen countries they are free to live at their countries of origin and practice in extremis their religion.
Why a european woman when has to travel or to live in any muslim country she has to respect the laws and the customs (in some cases she is obliged to put the fulard in order to be there like in Iran or in other cases she has to respect the code dress in order to avoid any provocation etc) so why the muslims they are not obliged to respect our values and our way of life.
For the european women also is a violation to accept other women to live with the burga in Europe. After so many efforts for the emancipation of the woman because of the islam the society observes without any reaction this new form of oppression. It is not a discrimination against the muslims is an opposition in any form of violation of the values in the European Countries.Nobody is obliged to accept them but is obliged to respect them. It is a discrimination against the europeens that are obliged to incline in a different system of values.

live and let live

christians or hindus or Buddhists do not have the right to build their place of worship in arab countries,so why are these people from islamic countries imposing their laws abroad. do not think you are better than others, nobody is perfect.

Yes

ban it as decisively and as soon and possible, and my other countries adopt secularism in government as well.
And I am sure your wife, Anonyme, was never coerced in any way toward the burka? Speaking as one who has been abused in this way, and has worn the darn thing...if you loved your wife you would insist she NOT wear it as they are unsafe. The lost of vision, the stifling heat in many situations, the inability to flee danger. It is a constant wonder to me this subject doesn't go away on it's own simply by the natural selection of these women stepping out into danger and being killed. I'm sure it's covered up in countries where the practice of wearing them is state-endorsed just how many deaths happen because of the things. There is, I promise you, no woman, if she is true and honest within herself, which most, through brainwashing, are unable to be, who would not tell you how they abhor that thing over their heads. Sorry. Not buying.

Please

ban them as fast as you possibly can, and may every other country in the world follow the example. Not just with burkas but with every symbol of oppression of women, and with every religious symbol in any public place.

A law to ban the full face veil in France?

As a Muslim man who lives in the US, who married a Christian woman which converted to Islam later, and decided to wear the "Hijab" on her own, I see this very discriminatory.

France claims to be the land of "Egualite et Liberte", I see this as a hypocrisy. What would you say to a French women who converted to Islam and decides to wear the "Hijab"? Would srtip her of her citizenship and force her to leave France?

when not in rome

for harmony's sake, the wearers of these chains to the 7/8th.century,should desist wearing it.just like the 2.9 million moslem women who do not wear it.or go home to some desert.they are also not helping the rest of their community,by this focus.the moslem community should attend to this matter.

face veil

what can i say other than its about time some thing like this was done wish we could do this in england but we r 2 narrow minded or scared 2 contomplate this as we always back down england is going down hill fast with 1 thing or another darren

Burka

Congratulations to President Sarkozy for his position on this.
for all the openminded people' reasons do not allow these backward motioned people to pass this to Europe.
If they do not want to comply with European culture, which they choose, they always move back where this is accepted.
Why don't they ?
