Man who forced wife to wear burqa is denied French citizenship
Immigration Minister Eric Besson said Tuesday that French citizenship has been denied to a man for forcing his wife to wear a head-to-toe veil and for rejecting the principles of secularism and equality between men and women.

AFP - A foreign national who forced his French wife to wear the full Islamic veil will be denied French citizenship, the immigration minister said Tuesday.
Eric Besson said he had signed a decree rejecting the man's citizenship application after it emerged that he had ordered his wife to cover herself with the head-to-toe veil.
"It emerged during the inquiry and the interview process that this person forced his wife to wear the full veil, deprived her of freedom of movement with her face exposed and rejected the principles of secularism and equality between men and women," said Besson in a statement.
The man's name and nationality were not made public.
The decision came after a parliament report last week called for a ban on the full Islamic veil in all schools, hospitals, government offices and public transport.
The French government is seeking legal advice before drafting legislation that would outlaw the burqa or niqab in as many areas as possible, Prime Minister Francois Fillon has said.
President Nicolas Sarkozy has proclaimed the burqa "not welcome" in secular France and come out in favour of legislation to outlaw the veil, but has warned against stigmatising Muslims.
Home to Europe's biggest Muslim minority, France has been debating whether to ban the burqa that is worn by a small group of women -- about 1,900, according to the interior ministry.
Justice Minister Michele Alliot-Marie said last month that Muslim men who force their wives to wear the full veil should not be granted French citizenship.
A French court denied citizenship to a veiled Moroccan woman on the grounds that her "radical" practice of Islam was incompatible with French values.

Well done! I hope the other
Well done! I hope the other European countries will follow suit!
my country is getting mad!!
Hi.i think this law is completly stupid, non sense and is absolutly not the main priority in this economic crisis time!state and religion are supposed to be separate as far as i am concern!!once again citizens are fooled.this gouvernment and co must think we are stupid or what??it's only less than 2000 women cases concerned in a population of narly 70 000 000.please give us a break and start doing your job you were elected for.!!.more jobs, more education, less taxes...""liberty egality franternity"".this law will never be apply because simply it is inappropriated(breaking human right and a european court will remind you that).what do exactly this women?they just want to have the ultime controle of their body.it does not bother me at all.i think if we keep digging we will find out the real goal of this problem!!keep citizens busy and away from real issues and problem!!after check find out that islam is a beautiful and peaceful religion!!a tous mes compatriotes francais...reveillez-vous!!
burka/niquab
Personally I would not be concerned if ALL these immigrants cover up, having spent some years in the cradle of Islam, I found it was only the poorer element who kept up this irritating practice, and having seen a few with their faces uncovered, I would suggest they do us a favour by being obscured.
It baffles me why the males think that their women would be ogled, unless they really mean they think an ordinary male with ordinary feelings go for such ugliness.
I suggest to those man they should get their women folk to encase their feet in covering footwear, because not only do I feel outraged by the fact they cannot be seen facially, but that their feet are usually an horrendous sight.
I am sorry to say, the covering is on the wrong end of their body if anything.
are they saying 'burqa' when
are they saying 'burqa' when they mean 'niqab'?
If you had ever worn a burka
for five minutes, or tried to walk about and do the daily shopping for two minutes in one, you would know no one would ever willing choose this. It is something these women are brain washed into, clearly. Aside from this whole issue...Safety. Safety of those around these wears as who knows what they have under there. Safety of the women themselves as they can not safely walk ten steps in them. I can't blame emergency personnel if they don't want to have to scrape one of them up off the pavement after she steps out in front of a car she was unable to see at a street corner. It is no different than emergency personnel who encourage seat belt wearing because they are tired of seeing people killed in horrendous grisly ways because they didn't wear them.
Besides that, the original desire to ban burkas was only to promote two things dear to my heart and to the hearts of all good French. Secularism, which wants only to ensure you CAN practice any religion you want in the private of your home or religious buildings (church, synagogue, whatever) and not let any feel their religion supersedes yours in the eyes of any, including the government, is the goal and I think it is an excellent goal. These people should be happy greater minds are trying to reach for a loftier goal, but of course they are not. Their only goal is to impress their religion on others and deprive them of the right to enjoy their own. Nothing in the Muslim writings ever in any way even asks these burkas of the women, and good, honest Muslims abhor them. I say we should be doing everything in our power to help these poor women throw off the oppression they have been so brain washed and beaten down as to not even recognize anymore, deluded as they are into believing they ever had any opportunity to choose other than the burka, seeing as they will be murdered in the most gruesome way possible by those who claim to love them best should they stick their noses outside without them. How can there ever be any choice where coercion is the basic mode of conversion to the practice?
i love the french!!!!!!
long live secularism!!!
France/Europe are not Iran
Citizen should be judged according to his virtue as a citizen and not according to his beliefs. However, when a person imposes his the customs of his religion or culture he came from, he creates harassment and hostility. Harassment imposed on that person of the same laws and culture or religion and hostility to the people around them who cannot interfere on behalf of respect privacy. Therefor this acts - Banning the borqa and Indicate increasing resistance to Islamic culture and attributes are understandable. Europe is a salad of false equality. And though it fake, no external causes may be more dominant than others by trying to instill the reality in which he lives. If he wants to continue living in the same cultural reality in which he lived before he should go back to where he came from or accept the fact that he should fit in and help to create something new as part of the local culture and not instead of.
about time
about time a government came along with some back bone....
UK government is vote led decisions :(
burqa
well done to the french goverment. about time some one stud up
Banning the Burqa
The burqa is ment to hide the beauty of the wearer. Muslim women are so beautiful that seeing them makes men go insane. To look upon a a women with a burqa is very romantic. It gives you something to desire, as western women with her boobs falling out of shirt pretty much shows all.The only objection I would have is how bad these beauties smell on a hot day wearing that thing.
BAN ON BURQA
WHEN WE SAY THAT WE ARE A DEMOCRATIC COUNTRY.Then every indivudual should be treated equally.Everyone should be free to practice his/her religious and social culture. This is not democracy being practiced by France.
WHY DO YOU WARRIED ABOUT ISLAM
IS IT ISLAM IS THE ONLY RELIGION IN THE WORLD.SO WHY EVERY BODY IS TALKING ABOUT ISLAM.THIS THING WILL NOT BE BY FORCE,EVEN ISLAM IS NOT FORCING ANY BODY TO DO ANYTHING,THE ONLY THING YOU MISUNDERSTAND ISLAM.PLEASE AND PLEASE LIVE MUSLIM ALONE
hypocrisy
And what of women who are severely pressured to wear demeaning outfits? Are countries whose societies applaud the objectification of women much different than those who are "forced" to veil themselves? Just because you don't understand (because really you can't unless you've grown up in their society, just like they can't understand the appeal of skimpy outfits unless they grew up in those societies) their mentality doesn't make them automatically wrong. Ethnocentrism needs to stop. No one should be forced to veil, but if it was her own personal choice, then so be it.
The burqa
Did anyone think for one minute that wearing the burqa might be a personal choice and not forced on the woman. Did anyone think for a minute that such a woman is deprived of her freedom when she is forced to take off something that she prefers wearing? I know of many women who wear it against the will of their own families because they believe in it, not because someone forced it on her.It is time that we grew up and left people to do whatever they want as long as it does not harm anyone else. Forcing our own views on others is exactly what dictators around the world do and it seems the number of dictators is quickly growing under false pretentions.
Good Job
Other Non-Islamic countries should learn from France.
Amil
Indi
The burqa
I applaud Pres.Sarkozy and the French government in their efforts to ban face and body coverings. Not only is it demeaning to women but it could pose a serious danger. Islamic terrorists will use any means to attack including women posing as pregnant or a man wearing a burqa. The problem with many Islamic immigrants here in America and in Europe is that they believe they don't have to conform to our rules of law based on their religious beliefs and to often we are forced by political correctness to accomodate them. It is my firm belief that if they want to immigrate to other countries than they have to assimilate to our culture and adhere to our laws.
Prisoners of their own
Full Islamic veil is like a prison in the cloths forms. The whole body coveried, burqa, and niqab all just like the bars of freedom , put women in prison whereever they go.
Wonderful!
Minarets in Switzerland, Burqas in France...things are starting to look less grim.
bravo France!
I'm glad to see that France is standing up for what is right. The burqa a symbol of oppression, and that should not allowed in this day and age.
Well Done
Let us never tolerate the intolerant.
BURQA - A TERRORISTS AIDE
WELL DONE FRANCE. YOU ARE TRUE CHAMPIONS.
LOVE, FROM INDIA.
Veiled woman

burga
he should move to iran or pakistan
Bravo to the brave French Govt!
Bravo to the brave French Govt; especially now being attacked by the French catholic church and the Trostkyist's party on such stand. I hope the French Govt will deport Islamist men who break the law. Particularly when they are committing such abuses of human rights towards their wives and daughters - by forcing them to wear any kind of veil or imposing any form of Dark Age rules, which actulaly symbolizes Dark Age sexist ideology - deceitfully using cultural rights, that include religious rights!
must be banned
I think if you are foreign in a country you must follow the laws applied in that country the way the other foreign people in your native place. We cannot blame France for that is their principles in their nation like the way if it stay in Arab world.
Ban the Burqa
You either want to live in a country and respect its values or you don't!! If you don't want to respect those values then the decision is easy - don't come. Or to put it another way, we westerners are expected to respect the laws of a muslim country if we decide to live in that country. I agree with the comment that I hope that the UK follows the example of France and bans the burqa.
burqa
the burqa has nothing to do with religion. It is a practice of Islam, not of the religion itself.
oh,did you note "ordered his
oh,did you note "ordered his wife" that is the incompability
I agree
Yes i think it should happen in Britain too, we cannot got there and walk down the street in a bikini. If you dont like the rules and heritage of a country don't go there...and especially don't got here expecting to incorporate your own countries rules.
this is no shit
As a matter of fact, I'm French and I think you've never lived in France.
The thing is that in france, religion and public life are supposed to be separated.
For instance, you do not express your point of view about religion at work or in schools. Same thing for every administrative buildings. Christians cannot expose their christian jewellery.
What's more, the law is about burqa only, and not the veil. Women who wear veils in France are well accepted, the law forbids only the veils that completely cover the face of the woman, and which makes her unrecognizable. You have to admit this makes completely sense.
I hope I ve made my point clear.
best regards,
The real issue for Eric
The real issue for Eric Besson is that 'real French women' are wearing the Burka not the fake French women. This is racism cloaked in freedom for women..
ban the burqa
lets hope that Britain follows France in banning the burqa, it has no place in the west
oh
I thought France is a country that grants the liberty of religion, but it doesn't seem so anymore. A French court denied citizenship to a veiled Moroccan woman on the grounds that her "radical" practice of Islam was incompatible with French values. This is shit !
no veil
so much for "voluntary"
