Palin calls for 'revolution' against Obama policies

Speaking at the centre-right Tea Party movement's first convention on Saturday, conservative icon Sarah Palin called for a "revolution" against US President Barack Obama’s policies.

REUTERS - Sarah Palin tried to rally conservatives on Saturday night at a national convention of the "Tea Party" movement, taking aim at President Barack Obama on everything from big government to teleprompters.

"I believe in this movement ... America is ready for another revolution," said Palin, former Alaska governor and Republican John McCain's running mate in the 2008 election won by Obama.

The Nashville convention brought together hundreds of activists from the "Tea Party" group, which hopes to make a splash in the 2010 congressional elections and beyond.

The three-day event had been plagued by infighting, pullouts and criticism of tickets costing more than $500.

But the appearance of Palin, the darling of the U.S. conservative movement, raised its profile and gave her a national platform to appeal directly to an emerging base for the Republican Party.

In a speech that made frequent appeals to patriotism and faith, Palin used the folksy, Washington-outsider rhetoric to lambaste Obama and his Democratic Party.

"How's that hope-y, change-y stuff working out for you?" she asked, mocking the slogans of hope and change that swept Obama's campaign into to the White House.

Tea partiers grabbed headlines last year with often highly charged protests against Obama's healthcare reform drive, a $787 billion economic stimulus package and other initiatives.

The convention is the latest sign that the diffuse movement is attempting to transform itself into a political machine that can get out the vote for conservative candidates.

All 435 seats of the House of Representatives and more than a third of the 100 Senate seats are up for grabs in November. Democrats have majorities in both chambers.

Palin encouraged activists to get out and support candidates who shared their values. Her speech was frequently interrupted by bouts of thunderous applause.

"This is about the people ... and it's a lot bigger than any charismatic guy with a teleprompter," she said, a reference to Obama's use of teleprompters which conservative critics frequently chide him for.

Referring to mounting debt and government programs, Palin said: "What they are doing ... They're sticking our kids with the bill. And that's immoral. That's generational theft."

Organizers at the convention said activists were forming a political action committee to help elect conservative candidates next fall. Other Tea Party organizations such as the Dallas chapter have on-going get-out-the-vote drives.

The movement takes its name from the historic protest against British taxation, the Boston Tea Party, one of the triggers of the American revolution against colonial rule.

USA needs a true Revolution

Palin

It is so sad that the media keeps covering this inept, Quitter who is a mere cheerleader for those who want to take the U.S. back to a time when hate and guns and verbal intimidation were a way of life. She is one of many: Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh, Hannity and FOX News that are a blight on American ideals and ethics. This too shall pass.

Tea Party & Palin

The "Tea Party" and their inspired leader Palin are not 'centre-right'; they are to the far right of the political spectrum as evidenced by frequently racist and ignorant comentary as well as the spread of misinformation through sympathetic media outlets.

Sarah and the Crybabies

These are people who are disenchanted that President Obama won the last election. Most of them are ignorant and uneducated. The problems they are "protesting" are the same ones that have been around from the previous (Bush) administration, yet there wasn't a peep from them at that time. The so-called tea party is hardly centre-right. More like extremist-reactionary-right. They are fostered by the Fox News channel here and are not a grass-roots movement. Now organizers are charging them exorbitant prices to go to meetings like this. Oddly enough, they will pay hundreds and thousands of dollars for events like this to protest a tax increase of a few dollars a year.

The only idea they have is to say NO! And yes, they are nearly in lockstep with the neocon wing of the Republican Party here.

They are the ugly Americans that Europeans see. We aren't all that way. If they get their way, we will become a third world country (we're not far from it now) and they'll continue the Bush agenda of burning bridges with our allies.

Palin

Jonathan Swift: "Whenever a man of true genius appears in this world, you may know him by this infallible sign: That all the dunces are in league against him." And all liberals are certainly dunces, aren't they! Hey, lefties, why are you so afraid of this woman? Well?

Sarah Palin as US Presidential hopeful

If George Bush (the son) could be US President, then Sarah Palin would surely fancy her chances.

Revolution

We need a revolution alright - against the Tea Party. As US citizens we appear to be afraid to demonstrate. I'm not sure why the fear - perhaps credit reporting is at fault. But we need to get our government back from the banks, insurance companies and big money lobbyists. We need to get back to having a government of the people, by the people and not of the banks, for the banks. We have a good president that wants to take us in that direction, lets back him up by demonstrating for him and not against. Wake up America.

Palin is a Joke

I am an American living in the stronghold of the Tea Party Movement (rural Georgia). It is a group of right wing fanatics who think that small government and small taxes are a great idea, as long as the government can intervene on others' morality. These people for the most part (I won't make a blanket statement) are uneducated, and fail to see the blowback the policies they would enact would set forth to the United States. Believe me most Americans want to keep our allies and keep strong ties with France, Germany, and other European powers but these people would set our foreign and domestic affairs back about 60 years. Whoever knows their American history knows what that would mean.

Misguided

As usual the French are misguided because you are misinformed. The TEA (Taxes Enough Already) Party is not Republican or Democrat. It is a separate base grown from the acronym. If you knew our Constitution you would understand the usurping that has been going on for decades. Their beliefs are limited government, limited spending, control to the people, all according to our Constitution. The lies from those elected are to stop. We will not accept a socialist government. We have defined who will be our leaders (our elected representatives) as we have shown with recent elections. We have no leader for the grassroots movement and WE do not want one.
