AFP - A French soldier was killed in Afghanistan when his supply convoy was attacked by insurgents on a road northeast of Kabul, President Nicolas Sarkozy's office said Tuesday.

The statement did not say when the soldier, a member of the 13th Battalion of "Chasseurs Alpins" (Alpine Hunters), was slain, but a NATO spokesman in Kabul had earlier said an unidentified allied trooper had died Tuesday.

The death brings to 40 the number of French soldiers to have died in action since the US-led invasion in late 2001. France has 3,750 soldiers assiged to the NATO operation, 3,500 of them on Afghan soil.
