In a bid to tighten immigration legislation, French Immigration Minister Eric Besson has proposed a plan that would see the establishment of “transit zones” wherever undocumented migrants are discovered on French territory, according to a French news report.

The proposal, which was revealed Friday in the French daily, Le Monde, comes barely three weeks after 123 Kurdish migrants from Syria landed on a beach in southern Corsica.

Besson is set to reveal a summary of a draft bill to the French Cabinet in March, according to the report. If it passes, it would be France's fifth amendment to immigration legislation in six years.

According to the newspaper, the proposal stipulates that a special “transit zone” can be declared wherever undocumented migrants are discovered on French territory. This would authorise French officials to immediately detain migrants.

Under current French law, “transit zones” are limited to airports, seaports and railway stations open to international traffic.

In addition, the bill would limit the possibilities of recourse for foreigners facing expulsion. While asylum-seekers currently get 30 days to lodge an appeal before an administrative court, the new measures would shorten the period to 48 hours.

Undocumented migrants expelled from French territory could then be prohibited from entering the country for a maximum three-year period, under the new measure.

illegal migrants

When illegal migrants are caught and deported there should not be a 3 year period after which they can return to France or other fellow European countries; the ban should be permanent and such 'migrants' should never again be allowed to enter the EU for any reason whatsoever. Unless Europe tightens up on illegal immigration Europe will end up like the USA with the same problem; this presumes that Europe is not already in that position (I think it is). We Europeans cannot take on the financial and social burden of massive illegal immigration: look at the USA and the costs this problem brings to their various state governments and the federal government. Immigration into Europe and the USA must be curtailed and only skilled people should be allowed entry; unskilled illegal migrants from places as diverse as Bangladesh, Kurdistan, China, Turkey, etc. have no place in Europe. Migrants must conform to the European norm; if they want their burquas et al then just stay in your own country rather than flaunting your strange customs in USA or EU.
Immigration in both USA and EU must be severely curtailed to avoid the illegal immigrant class from destroying our countries. If we need immigrants in Europe we can seek them in Euro places like Argentina, Uruguay, South Africa, Australia, Brazil, New Zealand,Chile, Quebec, Rest of Canada, USA etc.; Such migrants will be skilled and present no burden on the exchequer.
Europe should NOT be considered a land of massive immigration. For the unskilled migrants Europ and the USA shoulkd put up a 'closed' sign.

Transit Zone

This sounds a very positive step in something that should have been resolved a long time ago. Yes there will be instances which compasion should be shown, but the majority seems to be the illegal immigrants looking on entering countries to joing the gravy train.
