Western France hit by deadly storm

All of the French papers lead with Xynthia, the storm that crossed Europe this weekend leaving a trail of destruction, in particular in Western France. MONDAY, 1st MARCH, 2010

The editorial in this morning’s Libération says that the death toll from this weekend’s storm is less severe than in 1999 when 92 people were killed in similar conditions. Lessons have been learnt, the paper says. It also looks at the disastrous earthquake that struck Chile where the death toll is 300 times smaller than in Haiti despite the force of the quake being greater, at 8.8 on the Richter scale.

The paper provides vivid descriptions of the disaster in the La Vendée region in Western France. Christian, a boat salesman in La Rochelle, says many tried to drive their cars away from the coast as the water levels rose but it was too late for some who were caught up in the flood waters. He also describes how catamarans in a local sailing club were caught up by the winds and blown inland, landing in the town.

Other articles in today’s French papers:

Libération: “The storm in pictures”

Le Parisien: “At least 45 dead”

Le Figaro: “Insurance payouts will be facilitated”

La Croix: “The coast of la Vendée pays a heavy price”

France Soir: Natural catastrophes
