- Iraq - legislative elections
EX-PM Iyad Allawi throws his hat back into the ring
Former Prime Minister Iyad Allawi, a secular Shiite, is giving outgoing PM Nuri al-Maliki a run for his money in Iraq’s parliamentary election.
Despite the overwhelming atmosphere of violence, the electoral campaign in Iraq has sometimes seemed like a party.
In this report, supporters of ex-Prime Minister Iyad Allawi gather in central Baghdad to support their man. Many Iraqis, tired of sectarian bloodshed, are drawn to his secular message.
This election may be his best - and last - chance to lead his nation again.
Allawi, who comes from a Shiite background, is the driving force behind the Iraqi National Movement – a coalition that is trying to gain support from Iraq’s minority Sunnis community.
Allawi’s support is growing, but will he be able to make inroads into the Shiite base of the current Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki?

iraqi elections
I do believe from my modest journalistic experience that Iraqi people want to abdandon the path of violence and secterianism. The only solution is a secular rule that may act as a safety value for the torn-out country
