President Sarkozy’s UMP Party was crushed in Sunday’s regional elections, winning only one region out of 22 in mainland France.

The ruling party won around 36% of the votes, compared to around 55% for the left.

This story was on the front page of most French newspapers this morning, including Libération, L’Humanité, La Croix and Aujourd’hui en France. These all celebrate the “return of the left”.

Meanwhile, the right-wing newspaper Le Figaro reports about Nicolas Sarkozy’s determination to “bounce back”.

The French regional elections were also covered in the international press, including the American Monthly Review.

The Huffington Post talks about a “rough road ahead” for the French leader. According to the blog, his defeat could affect the outcome of the next presidential election, scheduled in 2012.

The New York Times however, says that Sarkozy is doing well on the international scene and that he still has time to reposition himself for the next election.
