Spain’s football club Real Madrid threw its full support behind French striker Karim Benzema, who faces questioning in a prostitution probe along with football stars Franck Ribéry and Sidney Govou.

Marca, a Spanish sport daily, reported Thursday that the French striker Karim Benzema enjoyed the full support of his Spanish football club, Real Madrid, “at least for the moment” amid a teenage-prostitution scandal that is rocking French football.

The prostitute at the centre of the scandal, Zahia D, said she had sex with international stars Franck Ribéry, Karim Benzema and Sidney Govou, according to her police statement obtained by the French daily Le Monde.

Benzema met with Zahia in 2008, when she was 16 years old and Benzema was 21. Benzema is expected to face the vice squad’s questioning later this week, Ribéry and Govou were quizzed last week.

Sex with a prostitute under 18 carries a jail term of up to three years and a fine of 45,000 euros.
