Queen Elizabeth II opens Parliament with a coalition government - the first in her 58 year reign
The British Parliament has been officially opening by Queen Elizabeth II after this month's election. The monarch gave a speech detailing the plans for the parliamentary session ahead, as set out by the new coalition government. The Conservatives and the Liberal Democrats have already started work on their first proposals; Chancellor George Osborne is cutting more than 6 billion pounds of public spending with immediate effect, to help reduce the country's £160bn budget deficit.
