The French Open’s Centre Court plays host to the women’s semis on Thursday starting at 2pm local time (GMT+2).
Russia’s Elena Dementieva is hoping to make the final of the French Open for the first time since her 2004 trouncing at the hands of fellow Russian Anastasia Myskina.
She faces gritty Italian Francesca Schiavone, who ousted third-seed Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark in the quarter-finals. Dementieva has won six of their ten previous encounters, but she will be wary of the Italian’s fondness for clay courts. In the other semi, Australia’s Samantha Stosur takes on Jelena Jankovic of Serbia, one of the game’s nearly women. Having ousted the likes of Justine Henin and Serena Williams in the previous rounds, the Australian seventh seed is regarded by some as the tournament’s favourite. But her Serbian opponent, who has reached this stage of the competition twice already (in 2007 and 2008), will be determined to go one step further this time round.
