The national team has crashed out of the first round of the World Cup, losing to hosts South Africa two one. The French coach's refusal to shake hands with his opposite number after the match was the last twist in a grotesque saga that saw his players go on strike on Sunday after one of them was controversially sent home. There's a sense that the former world champions have tarnished the country's image by washing their dirty linen in public.
