- constitution - Kyrgyzstan - referendum

A new start for Kyrgyzstan?

The people of Kyrgyzstan have voted to create Central Asia's first parliamentary democracy. The vast majority have backed a new constitution that strengthens the national assembly and makes the prime minister more powerful than the president. The referendum came after autocratic leader Kurmanbek Bakiyev was ousted in a revolt and after ethnic violence in Kyrgyzstan left hundreds of people dead earlier this month.
